Scissor Lift

Scissor lifts are designed for easy and safe access to elevated positions and are often used where ladders are not an option. A scissor lift’s work platform provides space for tools and movement, and can lift a heavy load.

Programming for 9695 - Belt Driven Colour Sorter

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

The Colour Sorter sorts your 4 colours bricks (black, blue, yellow and red) in 4 different trays and tells you which colour it is each time a brick passes the colour sensor. You can also use a light sensor to sort the bricks - you just have to change the block in the program to a light sensor instead.

Set the clock yourself and watch it go. Every hour the bird comes out to make a sound. It may sound simple, but it is quite tricky to make work!

In the simple version, the classic clock goes round and round, and every 15 minutes a bird pops out to make a sound.

Programming for 9695 - Grand Four Belt Rover

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

Start the vehicle by pushing the touch sensor. It will now go forward until it meets an obstacle, which will make it stop, turn around and drive in a different direction. If you press the touch sensor while it is moving forward, the front belts’ suspensions will begin to rotate/turn. This function will stop if the robot meets an obstacle, as it has difficulties turning around while the suspensions are rotating/turning.

Programming for 9695 - Humanoid

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

The primary function of the robot is the heart in the display which always ’beats’. The light sensor on the back is registering the light level around it: If it is dark the robot snores, if it is light there is no sound, but if you hold a hand in front of the ultrasonic sensor, the robot will take a few steps forward. If you push the touch sensor it will begin to dance and ask for music. If there is no sound it will just wiggle its hips, but if you play music it will move its arms and head.

Programming for 9695 - Intelligent Car

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

Start the car by pushing down the bumper. The car will move forward until it either crosses a black line where it will change course to one or the other side (random), or until it meets an obstacle which will make it stop, then reverse to the left or the right (random), readjust direction and continue forward.

Programming for 9695 - Robot Arm

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

The robot arm recognizes the colours on the big balls. If the the first ball is blue, the robot will grab it and drop it to the right. If the ball is red the robot arm will leave it and look to the left for a new ball – and if the new ball is blue, it will grab it and drop it to the right. If both balls are red the robot will grab neither, but return to its starting position. Please note that the touch sensor has to be placed exactly on top of the ball or else it will just tip the ball over and not be able to grab it.

Programming for 9695 - Scorpion

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

The Scorpion will move backwards when you are in front of the ultrasonic sensor, and if you move too close to the ultrasonic sensor it will sting! If you clap your hands in front of the sound sensor, the scorpion will move towards you again.

Programming for 9695 - Soundbot Advanced

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

The Advanced version contains the same functions as the simple version, but in addition you can turn the ultrasonic sensor on and off by turning the gears which are on the motor connected to port C. The constant rhythm can be turned up and down by moving the handle on the motor connected to port B. The display will tell you how loud the sound is and whether the ultrasonic sensor is turned on or off.

Programming for 9695 - Soundbot Simple

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

When you run the simple Soundbot program, the NXT will play a constant rhythm. Push the touch sensor for a clapping sound or make a loud noise to activate the sound sensor that will then make the Soundbot return with a clapping sound.

Programming for 9695 - Tribot

To save you time we have done the programming for you, ready to use in class.

When the program is activated the Tribot will move forwards and grab the ball and then wait until you make a sound. When you do, it will turn around and go back until it reaches a black line where it will release the ball.

Windows 7 Script

Please complete the following steps to install LEGO software on Windows 7 Starter Edition.

1. If the LEGO software is on physical media or a network location that you can not edit, first copy the directory containing the LEGO installer to your desktop.
2. Download the attached file, "AllowWindowsStarter.exe" and copy it into the LEGO installer directory.  It should be in the same directory as the autorun.exe and setup.exe.
3. Double-click the file, "AllowWindowsStarter.exe", to run it.  This will prepare the installer to be run on Windows 7 Starter Edition.
4. You can now install the LEGO software by launching autorun.exe and completing the installation as directed.

Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) Firmware Fix

This software addresses an issue on Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) that prevents updating the Firmware on the NXT.

Note: Do not attempt to update the Firmware on the NXT from a computer running Mac OS 1.5 without installing this software first.

If your NXT is clicking when you insert batteries, push the hardware reset button for five seconds before you insert the USB cable. This will ensure that the brick initializes correctly for the firmware download. The hardware reset button is located within the LEGO Technic hole below the USB connector on the NXT brick. If your NXT brick is not clicking when you insert batteries just go through the normal firmware download process as described within the manual when the patch is installed.

Instructions
Click on download to save the library to your hard drive. Doubleclick the downloaded file and install the legodriver.pkg. Follow the instructions on the screen.

WeDo: MAC OS 10.5 (Leopard) Sound Fix

This software addresses an issue on Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) that prevents using the built in Microphone to record sound in LEGO WeDo Software.

Instructions
Unzip the file to your desktop. To apply the patch you should launch the “WeDo Update” file located in the created folder.

NXT EDU: MAC OS 10.7 (Lion) Installer Fix

This software workaround will fix the issue that the NXT Software does not install with the Mac OS 10.7 Lion Operating System.

Installing on Mac Lion the auto install does not run in 64 bit mode, but the below workaround will remediate the issue.

1. Insert your CD and click on the CD icon on the desktop-
2. Install from the **.mpkg file- in the language of your choice
3. or Boot into 32bit mode by holding the 3 & 2 key’s down during start up

When you have installed the new driver and want to download new firmware to the NXT, please initialize the NXT brick before you start downloading the firmware. If your NXT is clicking when you insert batteries, push the hardware reset button for five seconds before you insert the USB cable. This will ensure that the brick initializes correctly for the firmware download. The hardware reset button is located within the LEGO Technic hole below the USB connector on the NXT brick. If your NXT brick is not clicking when you insert batteries just go through the normal firmware download process as described within the manual when the new driver is installed.

LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Design Engineering Projects

New from LEGO® Education for the EV3 platform is Design Engineering Projects, a curriculum package with 30 hours of classroom instruction and open-ended problem-solving activities that make learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through real-life robotics engaging and fun for students. 

The curriculum features three main sections with five design projects per section for a total of 15 projects:

Make it Move:
Students are challenged to design, build and program robots that move using motors with rotation sensors. In five projects students apply mathematics and science knowledge to create robots that measure distance, measure speed, move without using wheels, maximize power to move up an incline, and move and turn to create regular polygons. Students will also apply their knowledge of simple and complex machines and use ratios to describe proportional relationships.

Make it Smarter:
Students are challenged to add sensors to their robots to control behavior and to measure, graph and analyze sensor data. In five projects, students develop robots that use sensors that measure ambient and reflected light, distinguish specific colors, measure distance from an object, recognize a touch sensor state (pressed or not pressed, or pressed and released), and measure angular displacement or rate of change.

Make a System:
Students are challenged to design, build, and program robotics systems built from subsystems. In five projects, students develop systems that move a ball, pick and place objects, simulate manufacturing, sort colors, and communicate their location. Students test their system, gather data, and use that evidence to engineer system optimizations and improvements. 

The structure of the activities in the Design Engineering Projects curriculum mimics the engineering design process used by scientists and engineers in many industries. Each project starts with a design brief explaining the challenge, uses videos of robots in action to make real-world connections, and culminates in a final project that can be shared and presented. Throughout the process students gain and use knowledge of science, technology and mathematics as they engineer a solution. This structure is designed to help students develop the 21st-century creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills required for success in school and beyond. 

The curriculum is digitally-delivered and installs directly into the LEGO MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 programming software lobby. The in-built content editor enables teachers to customize the curriculum and create their own lessons. It enables students to capture their work directly inside the content creating their own digital workbook, making classroom management and assessment easier. The Design Engineering Projects curriculum was written to match national curriculum.

LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Software Single User

The single license version of the EV3 Software allows you to install and run the software on one computer.

This powerful, easy to learn, easy to use software for programming and data logging is based on National Instruments LabVIEW™. This is the industry-leading graphical system design software used by scientists and engineers worldwide. It is optimized for classroom use and follows the very latest developments in intuitive software design and gives is really student-friendly. 

Programming with the EV3 Software is done by dragging and dropping icons into a line in order to form commands. The language’s graphical interface lets students build simple programs, and then easily and intuitively build on their skills until they are developing complex algorithms. 

The software’s data logging feature is a powerful science tool for carrying out experiments. LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Core Set

This core set is optimized for classroom use and contains all you need to teach using the exciting LEGO® MINDSTORMS® set. It enables students to build, program and test their solutions based on real life robotics technology.

It contains the EV3 Intelligent Brick, a powerful small computer that makes it possible to control motors and collect sensor feedback. It also enables BT and WiFi communication (NETGEAR WiFi dongle WNA1100 Wireless-N 150) as well as providing programming and data logging. Green City for MINDSTORMS

Providing students with a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education robotics challenge that involves building an energy efficient city and programming robots to complete tasks such as powering a wind turbine and closing a dam. The set includes three training mats, a challenge mat and bricks to build a variety of green city models. This is an Add-on Set to the MINDSTORMS Education Base Set and Software and requires the Activity Pack for Green City for MINDSTORMS.

Rechargeable Battery DC

Designed for use with the 9841 Intelligent NXT Brick, this Lithium Ion Polymer battery with DC plug gives you an alternative to normal AA batteries. Capacity: 2100 mAh. Estimated recharge time 4-5 hours. Use the 8887 Transformer 10V DC to charge.

Colour Sensor

Using the NXT brick, the Colour Sensor is able to perform three unique functions. It acts as a Colour Sensor distinguishing between six colours; it works as a Light Sensor detecting light intensities, both reflected light and ambient light; and it works as a Colour Lamp, emitting red, green or blue light. You will need a connector cable, which is included in the 9797 Base Set.

NXT Temperature Sensor

The temperature sensor is a digital sensor powered by the NXT brick. Using the NXT brick and NXT software 2000080, it can be calibrated to measure both Celsius and Fahrenheit (-20°C to +120°C/-4 °F to +248 °F).

This sensor is also compatible with LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3.

LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education Base Set

This set enables students to build and program real-life robotic solutions. Includes the programmable NXT Brick, providing on-brick programming and data logging, three interactive servo motors, ultrasonic, sound, light and two touch sensors, a rechargeable battery, connecting cables, and full-colour building instructions. Software (2000080) and battery charger (9833/8887) are sold separately.

Intelligent NXT Brick

Programmable 32-bit brick, including Bluetooth™ wireless communication and USB port. Programmable dot matrix display. 4 input, 3 output ports. 6 wire digital platform. 8KHz loud speaker. It is possible to use a number of simple predefined commands directly on the brick. More advanced programming requires software pack 2000077/2000080 Requires 6 AA batteries or the 9798/9693 Rechargeable Battery.

Interactive Servo Motor

Servo Motor with in-built rotation sensor that measures speed and distance and reports back to the NXT. This allows for motor control within one degree of accuracy. Several motors can be aligned to drive at the same speed. You will need a connector cable, which is included in the 9797 Base Set.

Touch Sensor

Using the NXT brick, the touch sensor detects pressure - i.e. when the button is pressed or released. The sensor is also able to count single press and multiple presses. A LEGO cross axle can be attached to the sensor button. You will need a connector cable, which is included in the 9797 Base Set.

Light Sensor

Using the NXT brick, the light sensor is able to sense light or dark as well as light intensity in a room. It is also able to measure light intensity in colours (grey scale sorting). You will need a connector cable, which is  included in the 979 Base Set.

Sound Sensor

Using the NXT brick, the sound sensor is able to measure noise levels in DB and DBA. It can also recognize sound patterns and identify tone differences. You will need a connector cable, which is included in the 9797 Base Set.

Ultrasonic Sensor

Using the NXT brick, the ultrasonic sensor is able to detect an object and measure its proximity in inches and centimeter. You will need a connector cable, which is included in the 9797 Base Set.


LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Space Challenge Activity Pack

This series of classroom-tested and easily-implemented lessons will help you to teach STEM concepts. The Space Challenge encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning. They will work as young scientists and engineers, immersing themselves in motivating STEM activities that promote creative problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills.

The Space Challenge Activity Pack is for educators who want to teach STEM through hands-on problem solving. Even if this is your first experience using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® or robotics in general, this learning program has been developed to support you and to make the materials suitable for your teaching environment.

The Space Challenge Activity Pack consists of seven Challenge Missions, nine Learning Missions, one Basics of Gears project and three Research Projects, separated into student and teacher versions in a multimedia content environment.

Each mission and project presents a fun STEM learning opportunity. The LEGO MINDSTORMS Content Editor features all the tools the students need for documenting and presenting their findings and results as they progress through the material.

Three Research Projects – co-developed with actual space engineers – provide rich opportunities for students to explore and create innovative solutions to current space exploration topics. The Research Projects are based on three key problems that researchers from around the world are trying to solve: how to ensure human survival in space, how to create energy in space, and how robots can help human space exploration.

The Space Challenge Activity Pack features the following main categories:

– Basics of Gears
Students learn the basics of gears in order to build effective robots by applying knowledge of physical science and mathematical principles

– Learning Missions
Students investigate, observe, calculate, and apply knowledge to solve specific tasks.

– Space Challenge
Students creatively adapt and apply programming and problem-solving skills to make robots that can solve challenges related to space exploration.

– Research Projects
Students participate in discussions and conduct projects designed to familiarise them with the planning and development of space exploration.

Comprehensive Teacher’s Notes
The highly detailed and comprehensive Teacher’s Notes will help you to implement Space Challenge in your class and will minimise the time spent on class preparation. The Teacher’s Notes include key learning areas, explanations, hints, programmes, and ideas for differentiation.

The Space Challenge Activity Pack requires requires a LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Core Set (45544), a Space Challenge Set (45570) and a LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Software Licence (2000046).


LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Science Activity Pack

Developed together with Fraunhofer, a global application-oriented research organization, and in close collaboration with science teachers, this activity pack consists of 14 physical science experiments for middle school. It utilizes the data-logging capabilities of the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 hardware and software, as well as the 9688 Renewable Energy Add-on Set and the 9749 NXT Temperature Sensor.

Experiments are centered on energy (energy production and consumption), heat and temperature (melting points, insulation, and heat transmission), force and motion (mechanics and kinematics), and light (light intensity). Each of the 14 experiments is structured to fit within a 45 to 90-minute science lesson with small, engaging LEGO models that are easy to build and program.


Intelligent Brick

This programmable, intelligent brick serves as the heart and brain of LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 robots. It features an illuminated six-button interface that changes color to indicate the brick's active state, a high-resolution black and white display, built-in speaker, USB port, a mini SD card reader, four input ports and four output ports.

The brick also supports USB, Bluetooth and WiFi communication (NETGEAR WiFi dongle WNA1100 Wireless-N 150) with a computer and has a programming interface that enables programming and data logging directly onto the brick. It is compatible with mobile devices and is powered by AA batteries or the EV3 Rechargeable DC Battery.

The brick features:
– ARM 9 processor with Linux-based operating system
– Four input ports for data acquisition of up to 1000 samples per/sec
– Four output ports for execution of commands
– On-board program storage including 16 MB of Flash memory and 64 MB of RAM
– Mini SDHC card reader for 32 GB of expanded memory
– Illuminated, three-color, six-button interface that indicates the brick’s active state
– Hi-resolution 178x128 pixel display enabling detailed graph viewing and sensor data observation
– High-quality speaker
– On-brick programming and datalogging that can be uploaded into the EV3 software
– Computer-to-brick communication through on-board USB, or external WiFi (NETGEAR WiFi dongle WNA1100 Wireless-N 150) or Bluetooth dongles
– USB 2.0 host enabling bricks to be linked in a daisy chain, allows WiFi communication and connection to SB memory sticks
– Powered by six AA batteries or the 2050 mAh lithium ion EV3 Rechargeable DC Battery


Rechargeable DC Battery

The lithium ion EV3 Rechargeable DC Battery is designed for use with the EV3 Intelligent Brick and features a capacity of 2050 mAh. It provides longer run time than AA batteries and can be charged without taking the model apart. The battery is included in the EV3 Education Core Set and has a charge time of around three to four hours.

It requires the 8887 DC Charger, which is the same charger as used for the rechargeable NXT DC Battery. These are sold separately.


Large Servo Motor

The EV3 Large Servo Motor is a powerful motor that uses tacho feedback for precise control to within one degree of accuracy. By using the built-in rotation sensor, the intelligent motor can be made to align with other motors on the robot so that it can drive in a straight line at the same speed.

It can also be used to give an accurate reading for experiments. The motor case design also makes it easy to assemble gear trains.

– Tacho feedback to one degree of accuracy 
– 160-170 RPM
– Running torque of 20 N/cm (approximately 30 oz/in)
– Stall torque of 40 N/cm (approximately 60 oz/in)
– Auto-ID is built into the EV3 software


Medium Servo Motor

The EV3 Medium Servo Motor is great for lower-load, higher speed applications and when faster response times and a smaller profile are needed in the robot’s design. The motor uses tacho feedback for precise control within one degree of accuracy and has a built-in rotation sensor.

– Tacho feedback to one degree of accuracy 
– 240-250 RPM
– Running torque of 8 N/cm (approximately 11 oz/in)
– Stall torque of 12 N/cm (approximately 17 oz/in)
– Auto-ID is built into the EV3 software


Ultrasonic Sensor

The digital EV3 Ultrasonic Sensor generates sound waves and reads their echoes to detect and measure distance from objects. It can also send single sound waves to work as sonar or listen for a sound wave that triggers the start of a program.

Students could design a traffic-monitoring system and measure distances between vehicles, for instance. There is an opportunity to discover how the technology is used in everyday items like automatic doors, cars and manufacturing systems.

– Measures distances between one and 250 cm (one to 100 in.)
– Accurate to +/- 1 cm (+/- .394 in.)
– Front illumination is constant while emitting and blinks while listening
– Returns true if other ultrasonic sound is recognized
– Auto-ID is built into the EV3 software


Color Sensor

The digital EV3 Color Sensor distinguishes between eight different colors. It also serves as a light sensor by detecting light intensities. Students can build color sorting and line-following robots, experiment with light reflection of different colors, and gain experience with a technology that is widely used in industries like recycling, agriculture and packaging.  

– Measures reflected red light and ambient light, from darkness to very bright sunlight
– Capable of detecting eight colors. It can tell the difference between color or black and white, or between blue, green, yellow, red, white and brown
– Sample rate of 1 kHz
– Auto-ID is built into the EV3 software


Touch Sensor

The analog EV3 Touch Sensor is a simple but exceptionally precise tool that detects when its front button is pressed or released and is able to count single and multiple presses. Students can build start/stop control systems, create maze-solving robots and uncover the technology’s use in devices such as digital musical instruments, computer keyboards and kitchen appliances.

– Cross-axle hole on button
– Auto-ID is built into the EV3 software


IR Beacon

This has been designed for use with the EV3 Infrared Seeker Sensor. The beacon emits an infrared signal which the sensor can track. The beacon can also be used as a remote control for the EV3 brick through signals sent to the infrared sensor. 

- Requires two AAA batteries
- Four individual channels
- Includes a beacon button and toggle switch to activate/deactivate
- Green LED indicating if the beacon is active
- Auto power-down if the unit is not in action for one hour
- Working distance of up to two meters


IR Sensor

The digital EV3 Infrared Seeking Sensor detects proximity to the robot and reads signals emitted by the EV3 Infrared Beacon. Students can create remotely-controlled robots, navigate obstacle courses and learn how infrared technology is used in TV remotes, surveillance systems and even in target acquisition equipment.

– Proximity measurement of approximately 50-70 cm
– Working distance from the beacon of up to two meters
– Supports four signal channels
– Receives IR remote commands
– Auto-ID is built into the EV3 software


LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Expansion Set

This set contains a wide range of elements and is an ideal supplement to the EV3 Core Set. It has been designed to allow students to take their experience of robotics to the next level.

There are plenty of special elements here, such as different gears, a large turntable, robot personalization parts and unique structural elements. These are joined by many extra standard elements like beams, axles and connectors.

This set both helps students build larger and more complex models while at the same time providing extra or replacement elements. The set is optimized for use in the classroom and after school programs or robotics competitions. It will be delivered in a sturdy and stackable plastic storage bin.
