Introducing

Our exciting new LEGO® Education experience kicking off in August 2027.

Built to Inspire More Learners

LEGO® League is a fun, hands-on competitive STEM program for students aged 5–16. It can be delivered in classrooms or after-school settings and offers opportunities to compete in-school, regionally, and internationally.

Brought to you by LEGO® Education, as part of the LEGO Group, LEGO League is rooted in our core mission: To inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow, enabling every student to succeed.

Through this program, we build upon the foundation and success of past competition programs, from researching seasonal themes to competing at exciting global finals, while pushing what is possible even further.

LEGO League will be developed by many of the same LEGO® game, model, and learning design experts, for an experience that is collaborative, challenging, and of course… fun!

How it Comes to Life

LEGO® League will follow a familiar timeline: a season launch in August, the ability to register for local events throughout, and the opportunity to progress to regional, national and international events. Each new season will have a compelling theme that invites students to tackle real-world challenges and unlock their creativity in new ways.

As shared in our announcement earlier this year, LEGO League will welcome teams using LEGO® Education SPIKE™ and legacy portfolios as well as LEGO® Education Computer Science & AI for the 2027-2028 season. For the 2028-2029 season and onwards, LEGO League will require LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kits and hardware—while continuing to permit the use of any type of LEGO bricks in team builds.

We’re excited for teams to experience endless possibilities of LEGO Education Computer Science & AI and discover just how far their ideas can go.

An Exciting New Chapter - Together

Alongside our local and national partners and organizers, we remain driven by a shared purpose: inspiring more students through meaningful STEM learning experiences.

At its heart, what will fuel this program is the limitless potential of the LEGO® brick. The ability to imagine, build, test, and try again. The freedom to create something entirely their own and the joy that comes from hands-on learning.

This is what keeps students engaged. This is what sparks curiosity. And this is what makes LEGO® League truly unique.

We cannot wait to begin this next chapter with you.

FAQ

FIRST LEGO® League comes to an end after the 2026-2027 BIOGLOW™ season. In 2027, LEGO® Education will launch our LEGO® League program and continue to bring exciting project-based STEM learning from classrooms to after-school settings, all the way to global competitive events.

The inaugural LEGO League season in 2027-2028 comes in two versions, one for teams using LEGO® Education SPIKE™ and legacy hardware, and one for teams using LEGO® Education Computer Science & AI. The latter, which will carry forward from 2028-2029 and onwards, builds on Future Edition, with an experience we will continue to refine from season to season. Students use computational thinking and design engineering to collaborate on solving real-world challenges in the context of an annual theme.

The core components of LEGO League are:

  • A game-based Design Challenge
  • A Real-World STEM project
  • A culminating event experience that can take place in-school, locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally (pending registration and qualification)
  • The 4 C's as core part of participation: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity and Critical thinking

Additional program elements include access to:

  • LEGO® Education Coding Canvas
  • LEGO® Education Teacher Portal
  • Supporting program materials

No. As announced:

  • …the 2026-2027 BIOGLOW™ season will be available as both Founders and Future Edition. This will be the final season of our collaboration with FIRST.
  • …the inaugural LEGO League season in 2027-2028 will deliver an experience for both LEGO Education Computer Science & AI and Legacy hardware.
  • …the 2028-2029 season and onwards will be based solely on the LEGO Education Computer Science & AI platform.

LEGO League will follow a familiar timeline, with season launch in August, the opportunity to register for events throughout the season, and the opportunity to progress to regional, national, and international events taking place between March and July. Registration for the 2027-2028 LEGO League season begins once the BIOGLOW™ season is complete.

The hardware in the game- and student models will be based on the LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kits and hardware.* For team builds you can use any type of LEGO brick you have, including LEGO® Technic bricks.

*Additional hardware is required when participating with 8+ (US grades 3-5) CS&AI kits.

You can use block-based coding via the LEGO Education Coding Canvas, or advance to text-based coding using Python.*

*The Python package can be used with any Integrated Development Environment (IDE), e.g. VS Code, running locally.

The LEGO League ages 5-7 (US grades K-2) division is designed for students to work in team of 4.

For LEGO League ages 8-16 (US grades 3-8) we recommend teams of 8 students with a minimum of 4 and a recommended maximum of 10 to ensure an engaging and meaningful experience for all participants. Your local LEGO League organizer will inform you of the rules regarding team sizes for your region or country.

LEGO League consists of two age bands: 5-7 (US grades K-2) and 8-16 (US grades 3-8).

5-7 (US grades K-2):
For the age 5-7 (US grades K-2) division student work in teams of 4 and will be tasked to build and program a solution to a challenge around the annual theme. They will also undertake a small project with research and create a visual presentation.

8+ and 11+ (US Grades 3-8):
The division spanning ages 8+ (US grades 3-5) and 11+ (US grades 6-8) will consist of an annual themed game with design challenges, a related research project with a presentation, a culminating event and a progression as you know it.

To ensure age-appropriate challenges, learning and competition, we are developing differentiated lessons for students age 8+ (US grades 3-5) and 11+ (US grades 6-8). Students will play the same game across the span of ages/grades but will be scored separately to ensure fair competition and level playing fields for all participants.

With the 2026-2027 season being the first to incorporate the wireless LEGO Education Computer Science & AI hardware, rest assured that we are committed to this platform for the foreseeable future. The LEGO Education Computer Science & AI hardware is the latest development and brings the learning platform and collaboration opportunities up to date and provides new opportunities for collaborative game played engaging more students at the table.

The event structure will be similar to what our community has come to expect with previous competition programs. As with any program, we will make changes or tweaks along the way when we see an opportunity to improve the experience. As mentioned above, teams will be able to compete in events, with the opportunity to progress regionally, nationally and internationally.

The AI features are new and exciting, and we want to make sure that we incorporate these meaningfully. The 2027-2028 season will be the first to include missions that can include AI-tools and lessons from the LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kits in the solution.

Registration for LEGO League will start between March-May of 2027. To stay informed, we encourage you to sign up for our newsletter for all future announcements – including when to register.

All student and teacher materials will be on the LEGO Education Teacher Portal. We are exploring additional delivery methods to best support students, teachers, and volunteers as we move forward.

To be sure you do not miss any exciting updates, please sign up to our newsletter or reach out to your LEGO Education Partner.

Some details are still being worked through, and this is one of them! We encourage you to sign up for the newsletter or talk to your Local Operational Partner so you don’t miss future announcements.

LEGO League is an experience for students age 5-16. Once students age out of the program, they are encouraged to continue their journey towards potential career pathways via one of the many great STEM programs out there.

The best way to experience LEGO League is in-person, due to the hands-on nature of the program. However, as is the case with current programs, if partners wish to host remote events to ensure inclusion of teams in remote areas, then that will be decided on a local level by Operational Partners.

All teams are welcome in LEGO League – whether they are formed in the classroom, after school or in out-of-school teams and clubs. Building on past programs, we will continue developing the teacher support to enable teachers and coaches to take on multiple teams and engage more students to develop positive attitudes towards STEM futures.
