LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Quick Start Guide

Step 1: Unpack and get organized

  1. Unpack your EV3 Core set.
  2. Sort all the small elements in the red sorting tray. On the lid card, you will find a visual overview of how pieces are to be organized.
  3. There is space for the larger parts (including EV3 brick, battery back, cables, sensors, charger, and building instructions) below the sorting tray.

Classroom management tips: We recommend you label each set with consecutive numbers or names. Also, label all electronics with the same number or name.

Step 2: Build your robot

  1. Build the Robot Educator - Driving Base (PDF) model using the building instruction booklet.

Classroom management tip: Remember to insert and charge your EV3 battery.

Step 3: Download your software

  1. For desktops and laptops, download the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Software from legoeducation.com.au/downloads. Install the teacher version on your own computer and the student version on all the student computers. The teacher version includes additional notes.
  2. For tablets, download the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Programming app from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Chromebook Store.
  3. Please make sure you have the latest firmware installed on your EV3 intelligent brick.

Classroom management tip: Please bear in mind that the EV3 Programming app requires the EV3 Software (or the EV3 Firmware Update app) on a desktop or laptop in order to update the firmware on the EV3 brick.

Step 4: Open your software

  1. For a general introduction to the EV3 set (including descriptions of the hardware and software), open the desktop or laptop version of the EV3 Software and go to the Quick Start section in the lobby*.
  2. For an introduction to programming with EV3, go to the Robot Educator tutorials in the lobby.

Classroom management tip: You will find 48 tutorials included in the Robot Educator desktop software. Start with the basics before moving on to the more advanced.

* The lobby is where you start when you open the EV3 Software. The lobby is intended to make it easy to locate and work with the software and provide access to everything you need.

Step 5: Prepare for your students

  1. To prepare for your students, review the Teacher Introduction PDF located in the software and app, which provides an introduction to the software and classroom management tips.
  2. Go to the Teacher’s Support section in the lobby and explore the different resources available. Here you will find the Introduction to Robotics Lesson Plan, which provides instructions on how to run a 9-lesson Introduction to Robotics course including different open-ended challenges and references to relevant local curriculum standards.
