In this unit, your pupils will work as physicists and engineers, conducting experiments to investigate phenomena, principles and concepts involved in physical science and technology. Working in teams of two, they’ll complete a series of lessons that use hands-on experiments to explore gear ratios, friction and gravity. The unit concludes with an open-ended challenge, which provides an opportunity for your pupils to apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge in creative ways.
Trial and Error
Build a Bevel Bot and try to drive exactly 1 metre.
Build a Gear Model to master the basics of gears.
Build a Geared Vehicle to investigate the impact of using different gear trains.
Sliding Down a Slope
Build a Tilting Platform to experimentally determine the coefficient of friction for different objects.
Build a Drop Tower to experimentally determine the gravitational constant.
Drive Up a Slope
Design, build and program a robot that can move up the steepest possible incline.
