FIRST® has a mission: to motivate young people to become leaders in science and technology through mentor-based programs that teach 21st century STEM skills, inspire innovation, emphasize teamwork and communication, and foster self-confidence and leadership.
For 20 years, LEGO® Education and FIRST® have worked together to engage children in meaningful learning that helps them discover the fun in STEM subjects. Today, FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. and FIRST® LEGO® League and support thousands of teams from more than 85 countries — and they still bring the fun to STEM learning, with hands-on, creative challenges that promote collaboration, problem solving, and team spirit.
FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. encourages the spirit of discovery in young children, ages 6 to 10 (varies by country). The program uses a real-world scientific concept to ignite their natural curiosity and help them uncover the wonders of science and technology through imagination, collaboration, research, and building. Adult coaches mentor students as they use LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 technology to build and program a moving model based on an exclusive FIRST LEGO League Jr. Inspire Set.
Students participating in FIRST® LEGO® League focus on real-world science and technology questions or problems. They work together to design their own solution and build and code autonomous LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robots that perform a series of missions based on an annual theme. Through their participation, children develop creative and problem-solving skills, learn to overcome obstacles, and gain confidence in their ability to use technology.
This world-wide robotics challenge gives young people a chance to compete on a global scale while developing teamwork, math and science, and presentation skills. Students from more than 60 countries participate in four categories to solve specific challenges, construct solutions to thematic problems, and create game-playing robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 and LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 technology.
The WRO competition is open to students ages 6 to 25, with options for elementary-age teams, advanced robotics, and GEN II football (soccer).
