Sort to Recycle

Key Objectives

In this project, you will:
• Explore how better sorting methods for recycling can aid in cutting back the amount of waste that is discarded.
• Create and program a device that will sort recyclables according to their size and shape.
• Present and document the solution you have developed.

1. Explore phase

Max and Mia are very motivated to protect the environment.

They want to know how recycling methods can be improved in order to cut back on waste.

Explore Max's and Mia's questions:
1. What does it mean to recycle?
2. How can materials to be recycled be sorted in your area?
3. Can you imagine devices that can sort recyclable waste according to shape?

Share your ideas with the documentation tool.

Connect your Smarthub
Turn on the Smarthub and connect it to your device. Watch the video if you need help.

See the Help panel for more guidance.

Program your model
Program your truck bed to drop small recyclable objects at the recycling station.

Design a solution
Modify the truck to sort objects into two different groups based on shape.

Consider one of the following:

  1. Change the truck bed design.
  2. Use the Distance Sensor Input to detect the shape of the object.
  3. Sort objects in the truck.

Document your solution by explaining how you have used the shape of the object.

Design new solutions (optional)
Design a solution to sort three objects of your choice.

Consider one of the following:

  1. Sort the objects using a conveyor belt.
  2. Sort the objects using a robot arm.
  3. Sort the objects using two different devices.

Document your new solution.

3. Share phase

Finalize your document

  1. Describe your different prototypes.
  2. Explain why you have chosen your final solutions.
  3. Organize your information.
  4. Insert important text, pictures, screen capture or videos.
