What is FIRST® LEGO® League?
FIRST® LEGO® League sparks student interest in STEM and introduces science, technology, engineering and math to students through exciting hands-on project-based learning.
Teams are guided through the cross-curricular program, deepening the learning from LEGO Education Computer Science & AI. Students develop their academic, personal and interpersonal skills as they become part of a global community.
Founders and Future Edition
Starting August 2026, FIRST® LEGO® League will offer both Founders and Future Edition for two seasons:
- Founders Edition: The current experience using SPIKE™ technology. Final season: 2027/2028.
- Future Edition: A new experience using LEGO® Education’s Computer Science & AI hardware. First season: 2026/2027.
After the 2027/2028 season, the new wireless Computer Science & AI hardware will be required for participation.

How it works
The program is designed for multiple teams, making FIRST® LEGO® League suitable for use during school hours as well as in after-school programs.
The program takes students through 16+ hours of building, coding and researching and culminate in celebratory events, giving winning teams the opportunity to progress from school events, to local and regional events and even International Opens or FIRST Championships.
Season theme
Every year, FIRST® LEGO® League releases a new challenge based on a real-world theme.
The 2025-2026 season theme (launched 5th August 2025) is called UNEARTHED™.
During the FIRST LEGO League UNEARTHED™ season, students will examine how each tool, innovation, and work of art connects us to the people and ideas that came before us. Through critical thinking and design skills, students will uncover the past to discover the future.

Getting started
You can register for FIRST® LEGO® League as an individual team or by using the Class Pack. The Class Pack includes all the materials needed to run the program and is designed for groups of up to 30 children (3 to 5 teams), enabling every student in a classroom to take part.
The Team Meeting Guide supports teams through sessions as they design, build and code a LEGO® robot that navigates missions of the robot game, while also developing an innovation project solution to a real-world problem.
Throughout the Class Pack experience, teams will additionally develop the FIRST Core Values which include teamwork, inclusion and discovery.
Impactful STEM learning
FIRST® LEGO® League is designed to have a lasting and positive impact on participants across all demographic groups.
Our rigorous multi-year longitudinal study, conducted by Brandeis University Center for Youth and Communities, provides strong evidence that participation does just that.
Even with just one year of participation in FIRST programs, study participants are two to three times more likely to have gains in STEM outcomes than a comparison group of peers not participating.
