- Classroom teachers (individual or small teams) must submit the application
- Only one active TAF grant per school at a time; must submit final report on prior grant before applying again
Goals
- Fund innovative, hands-on, project-based STEM learning that engages students in inquiry, design, and problem-solving
- Encourage teachers to try new or creative approaches not typically covered by standard school budgets
- Support meaningful student impact — deeper understanding, motivation, and community connection
Application Due Date
- 6th-12th Grade grants over $5,000: November 1
- Rollins grants for other grades and amounts - see link above for more information
Grant Award Total Amount
- Over $5,000 (semiannual cycle; no stated maximum but past awards have been over awarded for over $10,000)
Allowable Purchases (aligned with LEGO Education solutions)
- Hands-on STEM materials and supplies directly used by students to design, test, and refine solutions during class.
- LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential — ideal for introducing coding and engineering concepts at the middle grades. Students can design and build interactive models to explore simple machines, forces, and early robotics while gathering data from sensors.
- LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime — supports advanced robotics and programming for upper middle and high school. Students can prototype real-world solutions, measure data from sensors, run experiments, and iterate their designs using Python or block-based coding.
- LEGO® Education Science sets — allow students to model and measure scientific principles in physical, earth, and life sciences (e.g., forces and motion, energy transfer, ecosystems). Materials can be used for inquiry experiments that require tangible manipulation and data collection.
- Professional Development (PD) — teacher training directly tied to implementing these kits effectively in the classroom. PD ensures teachers can lead true project-based investigations, integrate standards, and measure student learning outcomes tied to their TAF proposal.
Program Implementation Requirements
- Project must be led and carried out by the applying teacher(s) within the regular school schedule
- Must show clear instructional integration and direct student participation
- Final report on impact and outcomes is required
- Principal or administrator endorsement is typically needed to submit
Keep in Mind
- State Standards Alignment — LEGO Education solutions support alignment to NGSS, ISTE, and state-adopted STEM or computer science frameworks, helping teachers connect hands-on activities to required grade-level outcomes and accountability measures.
- Only one active grant per school; finish and report on prior projects before applying again
- Strong proposals show creativity, measurable impact, and innovation, and explains why the project is different or needed beyond ordinary budgets
- Administrative support (principal letter) strengthens applications
