Utah STEM Competition Grant | LEGO® Education

Utah State Funding

Educators and administrators from Utah public school entities may apply on behalf of the students benefiting from the grant. Private entities are not eligible.
Multiple applications per school are accepted; applicants are encouraged to coordinate with others at their school on financial needs since there is a shared per-school cap.

Support Utah K-12 students participating in STEM competitions statewide.
Improve student understanding and learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Fund meaningful STEM competition opportunities, including STEM Olympiads, robotics competitions, science and engineering fairs, math contests, and coding competitions (a non-exhaustive list; the STEM Action Center reserves the right to fund only competitions it considers meaningful).

Maximum award of $5,000 per school, regardless of the number of applicants from that school.
Funding amounts are based on the number of participating students, with a hard cap of $100 per student.
Awards are paid to the district, and this grant now operates on a reimbursement basis — funds must be spent up front, with itemized receipts and a final report required before reimbursement.

LEGO® Education Computer Science & AI aligns with this grant through FIRST® LEGO® League Future Edition, the new 2026-2027 season experience that requires LEGO Education Computer Science & AI hardware. FLL's own published Team Materials list — including building instructions, coding canvas, and team tools — documents this hardware as required competition equipment, which supports positioning the purchase as "student supplies" tied directly to an approved competition rather than general classroom technology.

Applicants must clearly connect requested materials to a specific, approved competition and an exact, verifiable count of participating students — misrepresenting student counts triggers disqualification, forfeiture of the award, and mandatory repayment.
Budgets must not exceed $100 per participating student and must stay within the $5,000-per-school cap.
Reimbursement requires itemized receipts and a final report submitted through the grant portal by the May 15 deadline.

Non-allowable uses explicitly include: apparel/T-shirts, meals and food, decoration items, teacher stipends or salaries, printers, laptops, and other hardware not required for the competition, team-building activities, and out-of-state/national/world competition costs (with one stated exception for teams traveling to Idaho for official FIRST Robotics Qualifiers and State Championships this season).
This is the critical positioning constraint: any LEGO Education equipment funded through this grant must be presented as required for the specific competition the team is entering — general classroom technology purchases will not qualify. The published FLL Future Edition Team Materials list is a useful reference point applicants can cite to substantiate this requirement.
LEAs are tax-exempt; the STEM Action Center will not reimburse sales, state, or local tax on purchases.
Districts should confirm with Sarah Broadbent (STEM Curriculum and Engagement Project Specialist) in advance if there's any question about whether a specific competition and by extension, the materials tied to it, will be approved for funding.
