SPIKE™ Essential

Science in Nature and Our Daily Life

This unit introduces your students to Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth and Space Science. Prompted by stories with animals, students help Maria, Sofie, Leo, and Daniel answer questions about the natural world and how it’s made. They'll explore the diversity of animals and plants in different habitats. Next, they'll experience and explain how an object made of a set of small pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object so they can make food for a pet. Then they’ll develop models that mimic the function of an animal in pollinating plants and dispersing seeds. After that, they’ll examine and classify materials by the observable properties suited to building an animal shelter. Finally, they'll design a solution to slow or prevent wind from changing the shape of the land animals use at their park.

Your students will also practice their social and emotional learning, such as self-regulation, persistence, empathy, self-awareness, and mindfulness with the main characters in the lesson stories.

Before your students begin this unit, we recommend the following to support their building and programming skills and prepare them for the challenges in this unit.

  • Access the LEGO® Education SPIKE App or install it on classroom devices.

  • Complete the Tutorial Activities (under the Start menu item in the LEGO Education SPIKE App).

  • Try one or more of the lessons in the Amazing Amusement Park unit.
